Goanimate is a great website for children and teachers. It's free to sign up and anyone can make a simple story animation with the free items it offers. If you upgrade, you can create your own characters and backgrounds. This site is great for a reading language arts class because it's an animated story. The students can get really involved in the story as the characters move around and also they can here the characters talk via the voiceover feature. This could be great for struggling readers to be able to hear the story and be able to distinguish between the characters. For my animation, I created the first scene as a brainstorming tool. I would show the first scene and then stop and ask my students what they think will happen based on other objects in the scene. I left the end unfinished because I could have the students come up with their own ending. I could have them draw their own scenes to end the sotry and write the conversations.
The wetpaint website is a great tool to use for a 5th grade classroom or higher. I used the site as a tool for teaching a geography lesson. I have the students reading a lot of information about the grand canyon and writing short responses. That would be good for incorporating reading into other classes. I could use this site to create different reading passages. I could put errors in the passages and then have the students read the passages and find the errors. This site allows for threads, so I could have the students write the errors they found in a thread. Other students could view these threads and add to them or have a discussion if they aren't sure about something. This site also allows for other people to add anything to it. I could have students create their own reading passages and add them as their own page on the website. Each week I could have a different student make a passage and then have everyone read it. They could upload pictures to their passages to make them more visual for everyone.
